I believe in Myself

This movie we made is about believing in ourselves, setting and achieving goals. A girl named Fusi tries to learn to play the piano but is mocked by her peers. She decides to prove them wrong by her perseverance and hard work. Finally she is able to play the piano gracefully and she is admired by her peers who had initially mocked her.

Nelson Mandela, Fusi

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

This article is about the life of Nelson Mandela. I learnt a lot about Nelson Mandela’s life story.

Nelson Mandela was born on the July 8th 1918 on the eastern coast of Africa in Mvezo. Nelson Mandela’s father died when he was 9 years old.

In 1962, Nelson Mandela was arrested and was sent to prison on Robben Island in South Africa,  because he was charged with sabotage and attempting to violently overthrow the government and sentenced to life in prison. Mandela was in jail for 27 years.

This article was very interesting because it had a lot of information about Nelson Mandela, and how Nelson became President of South Africa from 1994 - 1999. I learnt that Nelson Mandela was a brave person. He was commonly known as Madiba by his countrymen. Madiba means Father, but he is often described as the Father of the Nation.

Nelson Mandela died on the 5th of December 2013 at the age of 95 after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection. Nelson Mandela died in his home in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Duffy Role Model Assembly

On Thursday Morning there was a Duffy Assembly in the Glenbrae School Hall.  Our Role model was Myron Simpson.

Myron  is 25 years old. In 2007,  he won the silver medal in 2007 Junior World Championship in Mexico. He started riding bikes when he was 3 years old. He wanted to ride bikes because his 2 brothers were also BMX bikers so he wanted to be like them.

He loves to cook and eat at home. His favourite food is pizza. His favourite country visited is  Italy because he likes to eat pizza. He liked the beaches in Italy.

Pacific, Fusi

Pacific

Today, Glenbrae Pacific Group went to the Glen Innes Library to learn about the Pacific and also it was the Cook Island Week. When we got there, we met the Kaiakos from the Auckland Museum. There names were, Viliami, Mama Piri, Freda, Daren Kamali. Viliami was a Tongan, Freda was a Samoan, Mama Piri was a Cook Island, and Daren Kamali was a Fijian.

We learnt about the history of the Island countries these Kaiakos came from and how they used to catch fish, make their fishing hooks and what kind of food they ate.

We also learnt about the Tree of Life. The Tree of life is a Coconut Tree, In the Cook Islands, they call it Niu which is the same as in all of the Island Nations. They call it the Tree of Life because you can eat out of it, you can use it as your bowl, carve it and use it for Kava, use the husk to braid it into a long kafa for fishing and to put the hook on.

We learnt so much about the things we didn’t know about, even our own ethnicity, but we had so much fun. At the end the Librarians gave us some food that was delicious. I feel like going back to the Islands.

She also talked to us about food and drinks that had sugar in it and were bad for our teeth. I learnt that a can of baked beans has sugar in it.

I learnt that a can of Red Bull has sugar, 7 Up and and Coca Cola has 23 table spoons of sugar and it is the most sold item in all of the super markets.

On Thursday Room 9 and part of room 10 went up to the playfield  to play Rugby League. The tournament was organised by the Junior Warriors. There were 5 teams. Their names were as follows:  Junior Warriors, Warriors, Rabbitohs,Broncos and Bulldogs.

The first game was between Broncos and Bulldogs and I was in Broncos  team. The Broncos won  this game because they  got the first try and it was a close game.

Next, the Rabbitohs played against the Warriors. The Warriors had 5 tries  and the Rabbitohs had 3 tries and it was a tough game because both teams had strong and were fast.

The semi final  was played between the  Broncos and the Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs won by 3 tries to 1. Bulldogs were a tough team and they  played very well.

Finally it was the finals and it was a good game because both the teams were strong teams. The Junior Warriors played  the Bulldogs in the finals and the  Junior Warriors won this game by 5 tries  to 0.

After the tournament was over, all the teams got together for team photos. The Junior Warriors organised thie tournament very well. I had a great time playing and watching my friends play.

Friday, 16 July, Dora

Friday 16 July 2015

On Friday the 16th of July, my Grandparents came over to visit us.  Everybody in the house were busy cleaning up. I cleaned the sitting room. Then I did the washing.  My Grandma helped me clean and my Grandpa helped my Dad mow the lawn outside.  The rest of the whanau continued to clean the house so that we could go out later.

My Mum made my Grandpa and Dad a Sandwich.  Later on during the day, my grandparents had to leave  and so we also left for the shops in Glen Innes. My Mum bought my brother and I some spring earphones and I also got a ring and some rubber bands. My other Brother Tini, got a truck as he loves playing with trucks and it is one of his favorite things to play with.

When we got home, we had a shower, ate some food, brushed our teeth and washed our faces and then went to Bed.

Making Bread, Robin

Making Bread

One day in the weekend I decided to follow up on our science learning at school so I made 2 loaves of bread. I used the Edmond's Cookbook recipe to make the Wholemeal Bread.

First of all, I combined the first ingredients in a bowl. The yeast fed off the honey in the warm water and created froth with water underneath.

Yeast is a single-celled organism and needs four conditions if it is to begin dividing and growing, which is how it raises the dough. The sugar starts the fermentation. The heat makes the yeast start working but too much heat will destroy it. Another condition required for yeast to work is moisture which, like the heat, is provided by the hot water. Time is needed to complete the process.

Next I put in the wholemeal flour and the high grade flour in a another bowl. I then mixed the frothy mixture with the solids. I then kneaded the dough, put the dough in how water and waited. I then kneaded it again then put it back in hot water. I let it rise then baked it.

It was yum and I made 2 loaves.

Science Week, Maara

This week, the senior school had its science intensive week. All the students from Rooms 7,8,9 and 10,went to different classes and learnt different things.

On Wednesday Room 9 students went to Room 8 with Mrs Moopanar and we made fizzy lemonade and it did not taste so good. It tasted like a rotten orange. We also did another experiment with ice cubes.

On Thursday, Room 9 students went to Room 7 to make some bread. We walked inside and there was a table of ingredients for the bread. There was yeast, sugar, flour and much much more. We made a mixture so we could pour it into a bottle and put a balloon on top, we put it into the sun to make the balloon rise.

On the same day, we visited Room 10 to see what we were going to do. We walked in and there was ingredients to make scones. There were 2 ingredients that were standing out to me. L & P and Sprite. We made the sconces and ate it with milk, it was so yummy.

Science Week, Inoke

Science Intensive Week                                                                                          This week. the senior school had its Science Intensive Week. The major focus of the lessons was to look at the properties and changes of matter. We now know that there are three states of matter. they are solid, liquid and gas.

The first room we went to was  Room 8. We learnt what matter stands for and the meaning of matter is anything that has mass and volume and occupies space.

Then the day after that we went to room 7. We learnt how to make bread. The most thing that you can smell was the yeast.
The things we used were yeast, vinegar, salt and baking soda. Then Mrs Pome’e took the dough to the oven and left it there to bake.. Mrs Parker said that she would give it to us after morning tea.
Then after morning tea we went to room 10. We learnt how to make Scones with fizzy drinks. We used L & P and Sprite. Then we waited for half an hour. While we were waiting, Mrs.  Tofa told us to stand in a semi circle and we played 21. After half an hour the scones were ready. We ate it with our milk.  and it was yum.

Finally the Science Intensive was over. It was fun but my favourite one was in room 10 because we got to eat the scones I enjoyed having that Science session with the teachers..
