Malama Honua Event

On a bright Wednesday morning, the 25th of March 2015, all the Manaiakalani cluster schools went to Point England to welcome the people from Hawaii that traveled here to New zealand.   This event was held to remember the amazing skills of our ancestors,  their courage and their determinations and the way they provided for their families.

There were 2 Wakas called Hourua Hokule'a and Hikianalia. When they arrived , a small speed boat brought some people to shore. First we went and sat down on the grass when it was still wet. The school leaders did a haka and a song to welcome them.  Then there were Maori speeches and we had to sing another song repeatedly. An item was also done by Point England school followed by a few more songs.  There were over 2000 students and adults at the event.

Finally at the end we had to go and give them high fives and introduce ourselves as a farewell.  Then we all walked back to school feeling exhausted.

When everyone came off the boat, we started to sing some waiatas and performed  the haka to welcome them.  We all enjoyed it and we had so much fun. Then people from both sides exchanged speeches and more singing followed.

Malama Honua Event

On a hot, sunny Wednesday Morning, Glenbrae students from the rooms of 7,9 and 10 went to Pt England beach to see the awesome wakas from Hawaii.  These wakas were the  Hourua Hokule’a and the Hikianalia. All schools in  the Manaiakalani Cluster  had came to see this waka from Hawaii. We all walked to Pt England beach feeling tired and thirsty.
When we got there, Glenbrae school sat down on the cold, wet, green  grass and  waited to see the crew from the waka come to the shore.  After a while all the crew were on the shore. The  a member of the crew  started to talk about the waka and their trip around the world.

After the man had finished talking, all the children sang a waiata and did  the haka to welcome the people who were on the Hourua Hokule’a and the  Hikianalia waka. Later on we sang a beautiful song E Honore.

Later on we listened to the speeches by two girls from the Pt. England School.  After the speeches, everyone went down on the beach to greet the crew with high fives and hand shakes.

Finally we all lined up to go back to school while a few students went with Mrs. Adcock to socialise with the crew.  I felt so excited because we had gone to see the wakas that had sailed past the islands of  Niue, Samoa, Cook Island and the others.

Malama Honua Event

On one bright, sunny Wednesday morning, the 25th of March, 2015 all of the Manaiakalani cluster schools went to the Pt England Reserve to see the wakas (Hourua Hokule’a and Hikianalia) that came from Hawaii.

Firstly we walked to our assembly spot and  we sat down. Then we saw the first waka that was already there. After a while, we sang a waiata and did the actions while  the crew from the Waka came to the shore.

We all stood up while the crew came ashore. Then the Ka Matua spoke to the guests who had come ashore.  After that we sang a waiata and did the actions to He oho ra e and we all repeated it a lot of times. We saw the leaders from the twelve schools in the front near the microphones singing gracefully.

After that the crew from the Waka sang and a few of their leaders spoke to us about their visit. Then they  sang a  Hawaiian song. Soon after that a few students from Point England School  spoke to us  about the Malama Honua event.

Finally we went down to the beach to greet and farewell the crew with a few hand shakes and high fives..
